Review: For the Love of Drowning, by Joshua Palmatier
Book rating: 8/10
Book Summary:
When seventeen-year-old summer intern Luca wakes in the middle of the night after a party and finds himself in the world of the dead, he struggles to find a way back to the living. Luca discovers that the realm of the dead has many layers of reality, each more real than the last. If he is to escape, Luca must navigate each level, from a dark and oppressive underworld to a feudal realm and even to a heavenly kingdom.
How does an avid video game player deal with an unnatural death in the middle of his summer internship? Luca must find a way back to the living from the underworld and beyond, and he faces a world of supernatural horrors and dangers.
I read this book in a few days for BookExpo America, and it is my top pick for October. It's the first book that I've read from BookPeople's Book Expo Book Club, and I can't wait to read more books from the club. The synopsis intrigued me, and I was excited to get a good look at what's inside the cover.
The description got me even more excited to read this book. Luca, the protagonist, has been picked to spend his summer internship with a mortuary where he can watch funerals and learn about how to prepare bodies for burial. He is thrilled to be picked for this internship, but he soon discovers that he is having some horrible nightmares, and he has a deep, unexplainable fear. What is he afraid of? Is it something he might see during his internship? A sharp fear of death? Then, a party goes wrong, and he wakes up from a nightmare to find himself in the realm of the dead.
I loved this book. It has everything I look for in a good book: a protagonist with a strong personality, a world that is completely believable, and two strong, interesting main characters. It also has a little bit of romance.
Luca and Anya, the two main characters, are definitely cute together.
